General Information |
NLD is a neurological disorder which originates in the
right hemisphere of the brain.
Reception of nonverbal or
performance-based information governed by this hemisphere
is impaired in varying degrees,
causing problems with visual-spatial, intuitive,
organizational, evaluative, and
holistic processing functions. The syndrome
of Nonverbal Learning Disorders (NLD) consists of specific assets and
deficits.

NLD Class – Edmonton District School

"I was the principal of the school that
initiated the pilot program for students
with NLD. Our program was established for
students with learning disabilities that met
our district criteria of 100+ IQ, with two
academic areas below the 15%ile, of the five
areas examined. We noted that some of the
students demonstrated the characteristics of
NLD, and also were aware that similar
students would not qualify for the special
placement as their academic scores were not
sufficiently low - as they are often able to use
their strengths to compensate for their areas of weakness. So,
we suggested that our program would
accept 10 students diagnosed with NLD, that
demonstrated a 20 point split between verbal and
performance areas on the WISC, but
who did not attain a 100+ score on the full scale. The pilot was
to examine whether such students
could benefit from our program without
negatively impacting the existing program.
The pilot began as a one year project and was extended to a second
year. All of the students have made
excellent gains, although we believe that some
of the students are not 'true' NLD, but more LD. We now
focus on the aforementioned
verbal-performance split, definite strengths in verbal
subtests, with weaknesses in
performance areas. We note that most do not
fall below the 15%ile, or our new tighter
criteria now established as a result of $
cutbacks, of 10%ile. We look particularly for the weakness in
writing skills, in math - more pronounced as they get older,
and of course the red flag of social skill
deficits - also grows more obvious as the
students mature. This special need or diagnosis is now
recognized within our district, and if the
student meets particular criteria (as noted above)
he/she qualifies for additional
funding allocations allowing special
interventions to be provided in both inclusive and segregated
classrooms." [submitted by C.P.]
